I love the fact that no longer am I alone in this effort, in fact each and every day I wake up, breath, exercicse and look at my email and listen to voice mail, I realize that there is an entire army of Three Legged Stool™ Soldiers out there marching to a common goal of common sense pavement management.

Transcript Begins

So, ladies and gentlemen, at TED we talk a lot about leadership and how to make a movement. So let’s watch a movement happen, start to finish, in under three minutes and dissect some lessons from it.

First, of course you know, a leader needs the guts to stand out and be ridiculed. But what he’s doing is so easy to follow. So here’s his first follower with a crucial role; he’s going to show everyone else how to follow.

Now, notice that the leader embraces him as an equal.  So, now it’s not about the leader anymore; it’s about them, plural.  Now, there he is calling to his friends. Now, if you notice that the first follower is actually an underestimated form of leadership in itself. It takes guts to stand out like that.  The first follower is what transforms a lone nut into a leader.  (Laughter) (Applause)

And here comes a second follower.  Now it’s not a lone nut, it’s not two nuts — three is a crowd, and a crowd is news.  So a movement must be public.  It’s important to show not just to show the leader, but the followers, because you find that new followers emulate the followers, not the leader.

Now, here come two more people, and immediately after, three more people.  Now we’ve got momentum. This is the tipping point. Now we’ve got a movement. So, notice that, as more people join in, it’s less risky.  So those that were sitting on the fence before, now have no reason not to.  They won’t stand out, they won’t be ridiculed, but they will be part of the in-crowd if they hurry. (Laughter)  So, over the next minute, you’ll see all of those that prefer to stick with the crowd because eventually they would be ridiculed for not joining in. And that’s how you make a movement.

But let’s recap some lessons from this.  So first, if you are the type, like the shirtless dancing guy that is standing alone, remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals so it’s clearly about the movement, not you.  Okay, but we might have missed the real lesson here.

The biggest lesson, if you noticed — did you catch it? — is that leadership is over-glorified.  That, yes, it was the shirtless guy who was first, and he’ll get all the credit, but it was really the first follower that transformed the lone nut into a leader.  So, as we’re told that we should all be leaders, that would be really ineffective.

If you really care about starting a movement, have the courage to follow and show others how to follow. And when you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.

You see, when I sat down and wrote the mission statement,

“Our mission statement as IPMA™, the International Pavement Management Association, is to revolutionize the practice of pavement management through expert education, comprehensive technical training programs and professional certification for the world.”

for IPMA™ I felt like there were a handful or two of us at the time that were crazy enough to think that we could actually make an impact on our economy in this Country by doing things slightly different than we had been historically doing.

When Jon, sent me this short presentation I mentioned above it reminded me of all of the IPMA™ Academy Alumni that had gone through the online training, received their APM™ or Accredited Pavement Manager Certification, and have now gone on to change how things are done at their agency.

Moreover, they have not only changed their agency for the better, they have told their friends and colleagues in the industry for the better. (It has been said by one of my mentors that each and everyone of us have a close circle of about 300 friends and colleagues that we can influence.)   So, much like the vivid description that Derek Sivers makes above in his TED Talk, it is because of our first round of learners that went through IPMA™ Academy from all walks of life and backgrounds, they are the ones who I would like to personally thank for starting our movement.

For igniting the fire under their agencies. To stand up and say, we don’t need to just mill and inlay any longer. We don’t need to wait 20 years to do something with our roads, we can preserve them for a few dollars instead of wasting ten dollars a square yard on them for no reason.

Here is a BIG SHOUT OUT to all of our IPMA™ Academy Alumni, those that are in the program, and to those of you who are spreading the message of The Three Legged Stool™ System of Pavement Manager across the planet. Without you, we would be nothing.

I just want to take a moment to remind everyone that we talk about MicroPAVER™ and Street Saver® Pavement Management Software in the book as these are the two most popular software programs out there for doing pavement management. I do however encourage you to use whatever software you are most comfortable using and further ask that you do a thorough and exhaustive search as to what programs are available at the time you are reading this book.

MicroPAVER™ and StreetSaver® are the two that we teach when I do the UC Berkley ITS Webinar Series. In fact UC Berkeley asked me why I was only talking about StreetSaver® and MicroPAVER™ and I had to do my research and find out that MicroPAVER™ and StreetSaver® are the two most popular software systems out there. Again, on the consulting side of our business at TBG we use these two programs exclusively at the time of writing this book.

On the teaching side, we use these two programs at IPMA™ Academy extensively, but do mention in passing other types of programs that are available publicly. As with Berkeley ITS Department, they said it was okay for me to talk about those two software programs based on their popularity, but they made it clear to their learners as I am making it clear to you readers now, in no way shape or form am I trying to endorse any one product, service or vendor by their mention in this book. So I just want to make sure that everyone understands that and these are some of my own personal views as I write the book and not IPMA™ or the IPMA™ Advisory Board Members, or any of the Universities which we teach for or are Academic Partners.

Sometimes I just put on my own hat and I come up with a few things I feel that I must say. Remember, you can never feel bad about something you didn’t say right? But here’s what I learned from my mentors, if someone in this audience of readers we have grown doesn’t get a little pissed off today because of something I say in here then we are not doing America justice, then we are not really doing anything to change our current economic situation.

That’s why we say get the right treatment, on the right road, at the right time, for the right reason and with the right contractor. And not just because it is an election year. Again 215 years is how long it will take our hot-mixed-asphalt paving contractors in this country to clear up our backlog deficit of bad roads based on the simple calculations I made one night on an airplane trip in a few short minutes.

Go ahead and let your local pavement contractor in town know how you feel after reading our book. You don’t have to worry if a hot in-place train comes from out of state and into your county because you as an asphalt contractor are still going to get all the tonnage you got last year and then some. The only difference is that now you will actually be helping your local agency customer with a solution to our economic problem.

So you readers can go ahead and your local paving and concrete contractors and suppliers know right out of the gate, hand them a copy of the book and say ‘here you go man. You are going to get twice as much tonnage this year if you just follow this Three Legged Stool System™ of Pavement Management plan that is laid out in the book.’

At What Point Does the Pavement Section Become Too Thick?

Well no it is not. It’s actually a trailer park. There are three cars a day likely driving down this road but gosh darn it ain’t never going to rut is it!  HAHA:)

Could that money have been spent somewhere else in this county or city not mentioning any names? It could have been anyone in the America because is see that this same dilema has taken place across this country. Remember, I drove over 80,000 miles last year across the country, I have seen this first hand, it sickens me.

What is the answer you ask? Take the money that we are spending on this unnecessary stuff. Preserve these roads, put a little bit of pavement preservation down, take that money we are spending foolishly and spend it somewhere else on roads that really need it.
